I don’t particularly like all-out romance novels and so do not often read them to begin with. I find most of them a bit tasteless, just sex and whimsical lust without much substantial plot. Don’t get me wrong: I definitely do not mind sex and romance, as long as there’s a plot and method behind it all. And when I sometimes do get around to reading a purely romance novel, I occasionally do come across one that does indeed leave a satisfied feeling behind, the one only a good, hearty reading can accomplish.
Alas, this book was not one of those. Rather, it was just your typical romantic romp set in centuries past, with a more or less meek female character and the typical mightier-than-thou male. And then, of course, there are the typical heaving bosoms, straining biceps, clutching thighs, and thrusting manhoods… The only reason I picked up this novel was because it was next to the candy stand at the local pharmacy and, hell, if I was going to buy a Snickers, might as well get a book as well, right? (It also helped that it was pouring outside and the weather just called for some snuggling in with a book.)
But, anyway, I wasn’t much surprised at how the book turned out. I hadn’t been expecting much to begin with, and, true to expectations, didn’t get much. Like I said before, it was more or less your typical raunchy romance, found at bargain prices in any local pharmacy or grocery store. The heroine did not much inspire sympathy or a sense of camaraderie; the most I could muster was indifference for her situation. She seemed to lack much of a backbone to actually stick up for herself and what she believed, despite the author’s attempts to portray otherwise. Likewise, the male counterpart was equally distasteful, if not more so. It was all oh-woe-is-me, the-world-has-treated-me-so-unjustly attitude, which, frankly, grated on the nerves at times. And, of course, both protagonists were equally daft to the point of idiocy, as both tried to understand the other and claimed wounded hearts at any given time. Furthermore, this overall apathy towards the main characters also made the sex pretty bland as well. It was sex, he plunged, she groaned, they both came, 1-2-3, A-B-C, and life goes on. Whatever… *sigh*
Overall, I guess the best I can say for the book is that it was bland. The characters were bland, the plot was bland, the whole situation was bland. Already, the novel and its contents are submerging into the darker niches of my mind, never to be recalled again. Basically, I guess what I’m trying to say is that One Night With You is exactly that: a one-night stand that has had absolutely no impact whatsoever, not even in a negative way that a truly bad book would. In a week’s time, tonight’s reading would be but a distant memory, neither pleasant nor unpleasant, just something that was, nothing more.
Anyway, I guess that’s it. I give the book three stars because it seems appropriate in its neutrality. The book wasn’t entirely bad, but it certainly wasn’t a masterpiece either, not by a long shot. It just *was*. (But at least I enjoyed the Snickers…) ^_^
’til next time,

One Night with You
I will not rehash the entire plot as it has already been done. What I will say is that the book was well written and interesting all the way up to the last few chapters; at which point it became rushed. It almosted seemed like the authour was running out of pages and just needed to wrap it up. With maybe just 15 or 20 more pages the book could have been so much more developed.

One Night with You
This was a quick, enjoyable read. Characters could have been stronger, but they were likable. This book had a generally good plot. If you are looking for a light read on a slow afternoon, this is the book for you!

One Night with You
Well written romance. You don’t read romance for great literature, and this isn’t, but it’s a good book with likable characters and a happy ending. What more could you ask for.

One Night with You
This is my first Sophie Jordan novel, and I can definitely say that I will be trying another soon. Although the plot was entirely unoriginal and uninspired, the story was touching and rather sweet. The characters managed to stay ‘in character’ the entire way through, and although that was at times frustrating, I admire an author who can keep her characters straight from the start of a novel to the very last page. Kudos!
